The Brown Dog
by , Aug 23, 2002 (11:36AM)

The Old Guy took me for a long walk in the woods today. He goes there alot and it seems to me that he is looking for something, in fact many times I see him with a look on his face that makes me think the Old Guy actually sees something, but I don't know what it is. I just know that when he takes me with him I'm happy. When he sits to rest he always talks to me ...... I hope that someday he will hear me talking back to him.

Getting Away
by Bill Kelly, Aug 23, 2002 (11:03AM)

I was reflecting on the various people that come to stay at Fernwood over the summer and realize more and more each day that analizing the vacations of our lives can give us insight not only into our desires and goals, but also those things in our lives that we want to get away from. A vacation, if done properly, not only enables us to rest, get away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, leave the phone and bill collectors wondering where we are; but more importantly can truly be a time in our lives when we can quietly reflect upon just what we want to be and what we dream about our lives and our families. A vacation is a retreat. Not necessarily in a religious sense although it can be, but more exactly, a time to think in a relaxed and comfortable manner. We can even have original thoughts! When we return from a vacation we tell everyone just how much fun we had, but wouldn't it be great to tell people how it helped us change our lives. How our feelings changed about just what is important to us and what isn't. To feel an understanding about issues that we may not even be able to put into words - but we know and it makes us feel better. To go to sleep at night with less pain in our heart. To see things that we hear and to hear things that we see. To know that we are in the living years, the summer of our life and the real value of our life is today. There are hints all around that the season is changing. The leaves are starting their subtle change. The flowers in the meadows stand out more against the browning backdrop. The mist of our mornings when you can actually see your breath. The pending changes are not anticipated with fear or regret. Because we know the beauty of Death's Door.
